What Is Lip Filler?
Lip filler is an injectable gel, usually made of hyaluronic acid (HA), that is placed in and around the lips to add volume, improve shape, and smooth fine lines. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body already makes to keep skin hydrated and plump, which is why HA fillers integrate smoothly and look natural when placed well.
Lip filler is one of several dermal filler treatments we offer at The ReCenter. Because the lips move constantly when you talk, eat, and smile, we use fillers designed specifically for this area that stay soft and flexible.
Lip Fillers We Use
The ReCenter uses trusted, FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler brands for lips, including Juvederm®, RHA®, Galderma fillers, and Evolysse products across a range of formulations. Both Juvéderm fillers and Restylane fillers are made from cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel. Your injector will choose the product based on your goals. Some fillers are better for subtle hydration and fine lines, while others provide more structure and volume.
What Can Lip Filler Do?
Lip filler is a versatile lip enhancement option for patients who want fuller lips and a more youthful appearance. Common goals include:
Hydrating dry, flat-looking lips for a smoother surface
Adding fullness to thin lips or lips that have lost volume with age to restore lost volume for a plumper look
Balancing uneven or asymmetrical lips
Defining the lip border (the vermilion border) and Cupid’s bow
Smoothing vertical lip lines, sometimes called “smoker’s lines”
Lifting downturned corners of the mouth
Testimonials
“Who Is a Good Candidate for Lip Filler?
You may be a good candidate for lip filler if you are in good health, have clear aesthetic goals, want fuller, more defined or more balanced lips, and have realistic expectations about your results. Some patients want to achieve a subtle enhancement, while others want to restore lost volume over time.
Lip filler may not be right for you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active infection or cold sore near the mouth, or have a history of severe allergic reactions. If you are prone to cold sores, let your provider know. They may recommend an antiviral medication before treatment.
Lip Filler Injections at The ReCenter
Your Consultation
Every lip filler treatment begins with a conversation. Your injector will ask about your goals, review your medical history, and assess your facial anatomy during consultation, including the balance between the upper and lower lip. This is your chance to share photos of looks you like and to talk through what will suit your features. Safe lip enhancement procedures start with assessment, not recommending excessive filler before seeing your features. Our approach favors natural proportion, so your lips look like yours, just enhanced, with a customized treatment plan built around your features.
Treatment Day
- Numbing: A topical numbing cream is applied to keep you comfortable. Most lip fillers also contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic, mixed into the gel.
- Injection: During the procedure, your injector places small amounts of filler in precise areas of the lips using a fine needle or cannula, with the product injected to support lip shape and overall appearance while modern techniques help minimize discomfort and swelling.
- Review: You will see the results right away. Your injector will massage the area as needed and check for symmetry before you leave.
The whole appointment takes about 30 to 45 minutes and is typically completed in a single appointment, which makes lip filler an easy fit for a lunch break.
Lip Filler Recovery and Results
Some swelling, tenderness, bruising, and redness are normal after lip filler. Swelling is usually most noticeable on day one or two, and your lips may look fuller than the final result at first. Slight asymmetry or small lumps can happen for the first couple of days before the filler settles. Most patients can resume normal activities the same day, though you should still limit normal activities as directed around exercise and heat. Most swelling settles within a week, and your lips will look fully settled at about two weeks, when the final results are usually visible depending on the injection site and how your tissue responds.
To support your recovery:
- Ice the lips in short intervals for the first 2–3 days
- Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and excessive heat for 24 to 48 hours
- Avoid pressing on or massaging your lips unless your provider instructs you to
- Skip blood-thinning medications and supplements, like aspirin or fish oil, when cleared by your doctor, to reduce bruising
Results typically last 6 to 12 months. Many patients schedule touch-ups once or twice a year to maintain their look. You can see real patient results in our before and after gallery.
Lip Filler vs. Lip Flip: What’s the Difference?
Lip filler and a lip flip are often confused, but they work in different ways:
- Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid to add actual volume, shape, and definition to the lips. Results last about 6 to 12 months.
- A lip flip uses a small amount of neurotoxin, such as Botox®, Jeuveau® or DAXXIFY®, to relax the muscle above the upper lip so it gently rolls outward. It creates the look of a fuller upper lip without adding volume. Results last about two to three months.
A lip flip can be a good choice if you want a very subtle change, or if your upper lip disappears when you smile. Some patients combine both treatments. Your injector can help you decide which option, or combination, fits your goals. College students can also save on lip flips with our student discount.
How Much Does Lip Filler Cost in Iowa City?
The cost of lip filler depends on the product line, provider expertise, region, and how many syringes you need. Most patients need one syringe for a natural enhancement, while some choose more over time for additional volume. Your injector will give you an exact price during your consultation.
The ReCenter offers several ways to make treatment more affordable, including financing options, our membership discount program, and monthly specials.
