What are Fillers? 

Dermal fillers (or fillers) are gel-like substances (typically made up of hyaluronic acid) that are injected underneath the skin to address volume loss and fill in lines, wrinkles, scars, and other depressions in the skin. Fillers can also be used to recontour the face by adding volume to the cheeks, chin, and jawline.  

Beyond hyaluronic acid, fillers can also be made of calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA). It all depends on the type of filler.

Who is a Candidate for Fillers? 

Almost all patients who are struggling with volume loss and/or lines and wrinkles are good candidates for fillers. As long as you’re in generally good health, have realistic expectations, are a nonsmoker, and aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients in dermal fillers, you should be a great candidate for these unique treatments. We also recommend you not be pregnant or breastfeeding. 

The Filler Treatment 

Filler treatment could not be easier. We’ll begin by cleansing the treatment area with an antiseptic to ensure the area is fully cleaned. From there, your provider will prepare the appropriate filler. They’ll then use a fine needle to inject the formula underneath the skin. Where it’s placed will depend on what your concerns are. It can be injected into the cheeks, chin, around the temples, and around the mouth and nose. 

How much filler is used will depend greatly on the results you’re looking for. Treatment can take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. It can take longer if you are having multiple areas injected. You will be able to go back to your normal routine immediately after treatment.

Fillers Recovery and Results 

After your filler treatment, you can expect to have some redness, swelling, and bruising, but those side effects will subside within a few hours to a few days. During this period, you will want to avoid lying down on the treatment area, performing any strenuous activities, and exposing the treatment area to excess sun and heat exposure. You’ll also want to avoid taking blood thinners or alcohol use.  

As for results, you can expect some improvements immediately. You will leave our office with noticeable results. Full results can take a week or two as the fillers settle into place.
