Laser Skin Resurfacing

Lines and wrinkles, age spots, and sun damage can come for us all as we age. Luckily, with laser skin resurfacing at The Recenter, we can address all those visible signs of aging and more. With customized laser skin resurfacing treatments, you can have the perfect, radiant, and beautiful skin you desire.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing uses short pulsating beams of laser light to the treatment area to address a wide range of skin concerns. At The Recenter, we offer two different types of laser skin resurfacing: ablative and nonablative.

The ablative laser treatment removes the outermost layer of skin and heats the dermis layer underneath. By removing this top layer and providing heat to the underlying tissues, this innovative treatment stimulates collagen and elastin production and kickstarts the body’s natural healing process, allowing the skin to become firmer and smoother within a week or more. The ablative laser treatment we provide is CO2 laser therapy.

The nonablative laser we offer is Broadband Light (BBL) and is much less aggressive, but still offers significant results. Which is right for you depends on the recovery period you’re interested in and the results you’re looking for.

Who is a Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Are you in generally good health with realistic expectations? You are likely a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing. We also recommend that you have one of the following concerns:

  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Age spots
  • Acne scars
  • Sun damage

The Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment

Laser skin resurfacing is an outpatient procedure and typically takes between 30 minutes and two hours. It depends on the type of laser treatment you’re having done and how large the treatment area is.

If you’re having ablative CO2 laser skin resurfacing done, an anesthetic will be applied to the skin to ensure you’re completely comfortable throughout treatment. The laser device will then be used to deliver laser energy to the treatment area. This will remove the top layer of skin and stimulate collagen production.

BBL uses a broad-spectrum light to heat and penetrate the skin. This triggers the body’s natural healing process and stimulates collagen growth, reducing the appearance of pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles.

Once your laser skin resurfacing is done, Dr. Andrews will apply a special dressing to the treatment area (especially with ablative treatment) to ensure it’s protected.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Recovery and Results

After treatment, you will likely see some redness and swelling. You may also notice some itching or stinging, but those side effects will dissipate within the first few days.

For BBL treatment, your skin may become dry and start peeling after about a week.

For CO2 laser skin resurfacing, since the top layer of skin is removed, the recovery time is longer, and you may not see final improvements for several months. For the first few days, you will feel some discomfort, but it should resolve within 48 hours. For three to four days after treatment, your face will feel tight and swollen, and a crust may form. As you heal, your new radiant skin will shine through. You should be mostly healed after a week or so, but it will likely take several more months to see the final results.

To ensure proper healing and optimal results, you’ll want to avoid picking at your skin, clean the treated areas as advised, and wear moisturizer and sunscreen.

The results for BBL typically last for months and require repeated treatment to maintain those results. For CO2 laser therapy, the results can last for years.
